The Gherkin is the London’s skyscraper standing at an approximate height 180 meters with 41 stories. It was completed in December 2003 and opened for commercial use in April 2004. The Gherkin stands at the former site of Baltic exchange which was severely damaged in the year 1992 by the bomb explosion. The architecture is iconic, impressive and prestigious which was designed by the world’s famous “Norman Forester”.
Gherkin’s Design and Construction
The Gherkin’s building has been constructed by Skanska. The main occupant of the Gherkin’s is a global reinsurance company named “Swiss Re” which is using this building as its head office for United Kingdom. Due to this reason this tower is also known as the “Swiss Re Building” but this name is not very popular and has not been selected by most because the company’s headquarter is present in Zurich, Switzerland. So, the Gherkin name has become famous and official too.
The top three floors of the building is being occupied by Searcy’s which is a famous providers of world class catering services for private parties and most importantly for corporate events at the Gherkin. The Gherkin’s glass dome at the top is available for private hire which is ideal for product launches, prestigious events and also for high standard weddings. This features an exclusive lounge, a restaurant with private rooms for dining purpose offering finest menu with a 360° view of the beautiful London city.
Gherkin’s Opening and Commercial Launch
After the grand opening of Gherkin’s in April 2004, there was an incident that happened in April 2005 regarding a two-third portion of a glass panel of the tower that had fallen beneath the plaza. It was later on repaired and the operations on the damaged floors again started as usual. The building has been awarded for its beautiful looking architecture. Also, many architects and engineers consider it as a crown jewel of London city which is basically a financial and business hub of not only England but of the whole United Kingdom too. The Gherkin’s has some new standards in construction project management and taught the industry gurus some innovative way of building and development.
The architect of the Gherkin’s was awarded with 2004 RIBA Stirling Prize on October 2004 and it was the first time when the jury reaches to a unanimous decision. In the year 2005, a survey from the world’s leading architect “BD World Architecture 200” voted the tower as one of the most admiring new building structure. The building was put for public sale for a number of times in the past and has been sold to some groups and organization. But currently The Gherkin’s is being owned and operated by Safra Group. The Safra Group is owned by a Brazilian Billionaire named Josef Safra who has bought it in November 2014 for an estimated cost of £700 million.
